Here it is, from the Garret Wade book of Woodworking Tools.

Silent, you were closing in, ask a question.

Pardon my lack of working knowledge but where does a sculptor's chisel come close to what seems like in essence a machinists vice?????

A former star of a cult sci fi TV show wrote a children's book in 1999 in which the main character came to an unhappy end in a tree. Who was it and what was the title of the book?

    Mark,
Mainly, both the chisel and the 'chops' are used by a wood sculptor.

This is what Garret Wade has to say about it.
"A vice which was designed for the woodcarver is the Scopas Chops. It is made of wood, with deep jaws and protective leather strips, and has a steel screw and nut and another screw which passes through a hole in the bench top to secure the vice."
I flick passed to Silent because the topic had gone on for a day and he was
    homing in on it.
I suspect the Scopas Chops (possibly with a wooden screw) predates the machinists vice.

Is anyone going to have a shot at the answer, or do I need to post a clue?

OK, well the TV show was/is a very long running one that has used a somewhat unique way of allowing different actors to play the same character over the years. The book is not really a children's book but is written in the style of one.

I can confirm that the actor/author in question does still have both his ears.

He has also appeared in Black Adder....
