    Default Stain under Shellac

    Hi Folks,

I had a nasty run in on the weekend with a wattyl stain on spotted gum that started to come off when I put the first coat of shellac on. Drying times for the stain were well exceeded and all fresh product.

My question is: what are you using under shellac as a stain to avoid this or am I simply doing something dumb?...err, again.

    Al.

You need to use a stain that is incompatible with the shellac, oil or water should be fine. Spirit stain will pull off with the shellac because it's reconstituted buy the metho (spirit) in the polish,

Thanks mate, much obliged. I've used water based stains in the past with great success but on this occasion the spotted gum didn't seem to like it too much (was sitting onthe surface). Maybe I should have applied hot?

Does spotted gum have a high oil content?
    Cheers, Ern
