Another use for a butchers steel?
It has crossed my mind that it may be possible to use a butchers steel for sharpening a scraper.
Would any butchers (including wood butchers) know if the steel is in fact near hard enough? This is the problem i am faced with.
Also, most have flutes like shop purchased dowels. Would the flutes in the steel create any problem in the sharpening process?

In my view they are plenty hard enough, but you would need to expend some elbow grease and a few sheets of emery cloth polishing them - a smooth surface works best.
Here is my newish burnisher - a bit of HSS rod and a She-oak handle. Works well, but no better than the ugly old 3-corner file I polished off & used for 20-something years, which was marginally better than the screwdriver shaft I'd used prior to that. (Recommended by no less a personality than Tage Frid)
