Weatherboard windows

It's the bottom sash. While I can easily measure from left to right on the window, it's a little more difficult to measure the height of window. What I need to know is how do you determine the size of the glass that's needed to replace the broken one. Do these windows normally have grooves along the top?

The bottom sash has a groove about 6or 7 mm deep at the top, into which the glass slips, and is usually puttied in. If you allow 5mm you should be safe.

To replace the glass it would be a lot easier if I could remove the bottom sash . There appear to be springs that the sashes ride up and down in. Are these sort of windows easy to take out?
