Are these termites? (pics inside)
Found these critters crawling around in some termite-eaten timber, are these the culprits? They are about 5-6mm long with a distinct brown colour.

I am not an entomologist but I don't think so.
I suspect they are looking for the termites to eat.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

I'm with Clidd. I'm not an insect person but I thought that termites were also called white ants for a reason. I found a picture from a pest control site of what to look for and they are white. However, I think that some of the 'swarming' termites are a different colour.

They are the indigenous termites who inhabited the land before the white termites took over.
The white termites eat the wood, but pay the indigenous termites for the privilege. If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

If they're not termites, they might as well be. Side-cutting jaws look like they're made for chopping wood.

I don't think its a borer/beetle or termite because it has no wings and looks more like some kind of ant. Have a look here. They were probably more looking in the termite ridden wood to build a home or lay eggs.

I can say categorically that they are not termites. They are an ant of some description.

BTW - I am told Termites don't actually eat wood - they use the wood pulp to foster growth of a fungus that they feed their larvae .... does my fence, gates and front entrance absolutely no good knowing that, but that's what I was told
