I found some white stuff at Bunnies in the paints & oils & finishes section a while back.

Bunnings. I found white stuff there, you should have a look 'cos they may also have black stuff.

I don't know what I was thinking Cliff. I had it in my mind you'd given me some cryptic message.

I did have a look at Bunnings and had no joy.

    Harry,

thanks for throwing that one up. I had seen it but don't want to go down that track just yet. I was hoping to buy a small container of the stuff and have a play and see if I like it.

Buy some normal non-coloured wax and mix some black stain into it... add a little heat(stand in a pot of boiling water)

    seriously
I once used oxblood coloured boot polish on an old gun stock ,as a finish , worked ok and still looks good.

    Woodlee, thought the same thing.

    Black Nugget. Worth a try.

Some turners use skuff stuff for ebonising their work but it may not be the result you are after.

    G'day Arch

I have some black wax made by Liberon, which I obtained locally - surely there is a Liberon distributor somewhere in Melbourne.

    Right,

I got out the Kiwi nugget and gave that a burl on my test piece before work tonight. Not bad, only a very subtle difference from the F&W dark brown.

I did do a fair bit of searching before I hit you boys up for some answers. I found one called Inca but it appeared to be a bees wax with out any carnauba in it and my understanding is that the carnauba is desirable.

I have revisited the Liberon sites after the Tip from Tornatus. I couldn't find any of their wax before or now in a black. However on closer inspection I found their description of Tudor oak as "the darkest brown - close to black".

I've got plenty to work with now. I'll forget about making my own and I'll put the shoe polish aside for now. The Liberon is now on top of the list.

The Liberon is good stuff but I've found it 'goes off' pretty quick ... so apply and then buff soon after. Soon as in a minute or two on one of our average summer days .. whatever that is these days. Still seems to be summer in Melb.
    Cheers, Ern
