Standard charge for additional power point

Hi there,

We've recently purchased a new house that was nearly complete so I didn't have an opportunity to specify additional power outlets in the house or workshop (garage). I received an estimate to add various power points, circuits, and light fixtures.

For the addition of a standard outlet (e.g. in the kitchen or outside) the price was roughly $165. Is that reasonable? (I'm pretty sure for this price he's just going to tie into existing circuits).

Any info is appreciated!

For one that would be quite reasonable to take into account base charge for call out. I would think any additional points from there would be a little bit cheaper each, however he does have to supply, install, test and importantly sign off on his licence number for a certificate of electrical safety. Joining into existing circuits is a correct way to do it unless there is a reason not to. eg. high amps, or full circuit.

That wouldn't be far off what I'd expect but as above, if you have multiple things that need doing as for a price for them all at once. I think that would make a significant difference.

Cost of Power point about $10. Labour, About $75 ph.

In most instances I can put a point in on in an existing circuit in under an hour.
Of course access to where the existing circuit is the issue, combined with getting the cable to where you want it.

So if the $165 is going to be right I'd be expecting your guy to be there for about 2 hours.
That would tell me that access to the two location source of power to the new point would be non trivial.

Hi all

My experience with electricicans - if its a new house I would presume you have a few to add, if not go around the house and double check.

If you have one power point done the cost is around $150 - 160, but if you have multiple things done they will charge by the hour and that cheaper, most hourly rates are around $100 and call out $70, I had 4 ceiling fans disconnected ceiling and wall / 7 points added / oven disconnected / 3 pwr points moved all in 5 hours cost $492.00

so make sure you get as much done as possible.

Obviousy the hourly rates in perth are higher...I charge $75 ph plus gst with no call out...I know I'm in the uper quarter of charges....

Gee can you come over here, the last one I used $70 call out and $117 ph, though they were fast

I budget $150ph for electrician/plumber this covers callout & materials, time and me changing my mind once they get there, so far I have been pretty much spot on, under budget rather than over.

Thanks for the advice & discussion.

I think I'll get a second estimate. The $165 per outlet was part of a larger quote (~$2500 worth of work) so I think the price was a little high a number of tasks. My suspicion is there is plenty of work in Canberra so the price moves up accordingly.
