A month ban from woodworking
Iam involved a very serious health situation. Its part of an ongoing saga.
The main point of concern here is that there are some problems with my blood. My immune system could potentially be wiped out and so i am going to be housebound expect for regular blood tests. (if iam lucky. Hospital if not) This is likely to continue for the next 3 to 4 weeks.
The clotting agent in my blood could also be compromised so any small cuts could proove fatal.
After a discussion with my doctor he barred me from doing anything with sharp objects. WHich is a shame because woodcarving is so relaxing and something that could help me through the next month.
Its weird. Sometimes the very things that you rely on to help you get through hardships get taken away from you. And the thing is sometimes the reveal new strengths. I'll find peace through some other project iam sure.
Whats that?
I can hear the sculpture iam working on calling me from outside this moment

Take care of yourself. It is not worth the risk to disregard the advice.Tom

Ben, it seems you have choices: accept "This is likely to continue for the next 3 to 4 weeks." or, risk potentially losing your pleasure full time.
Take the advice Mate, and all the best of luck.

Since being diagnosed with cancer approx 6 months ago, I was also told to back-off on everything that I used to do in the workshop for the first 4 or so months, until my condition improved. At that stage I could only get out of bed for approx 1 hour a day anyway. I strictly adhered to this request, mainly because I couldn't do much else anyway, Now down the track I have picked up somewhat and can stay up and about for about 3 - 4 hours a day.
So what I am saying is 'do as you are told' and hopefully down the track you will also improve and be able to do the things you desire. I also realise that you cannot sit on your backside and watch telly all day.
They are hard and fast rules, but in your best interest.
Kind Regards,
Ron.

HI Ron. If you dont mind me asking. What form of cancer do you have.?
The whole of my situation is this. I, myself was diagnosed with the big C in 2004. I Had a brain tumour removed which revealed a very aggresive grade of cancer. I did radio and chemo and undertook regular scans. Unfortunately it came back and i had some more surgery last month. It all went well again and i've bounced back.
I've been doing more chemo. Which is where the problem lies. There was a very unfortunate problem with the dosage and my blood has been potentially damaged.
I've been through too much to risk anything by doing anything stupid so i dont think i'll have a problem.
The real danger is that i'll be spending a lot of time bitching about things on internet forums.

Hi Ben,
The cancer that I have is prostate with a PSA reading of 1966( should be 4), and bone cancer to 95% of my bones, fortunately my other organs are all clear. (I have written a thread re Cancer about four months ago on this forum).
I started Chemo three months ago, and still have 5 months to go, as well as having an injection in the rear end every 5 - 6 months. At the moment my health is probably the best its been for 7 - 8 months.
Both Chemo and Radiation can be very, very touchy, as it affects different people in a totally different way.
I hope everything goes OK for you, as I said before 'take it easy'.
Kind Regards,
Ron.

Are you allowed to use a pencil or pen?
If I was stuck out of my shed I would put some time into design and practicing drawing. I find the more time I spend on designing something (including considerations of the "how" as well as the "what") the easier/quicker it happens when I eventually get to the tool bench.
Just a thought.
Cheers and good luck.

Thanks people. And thank you GRA^
I reckon this is a good opurtunity to reassess some of my other creative avenues. I've explored many artforms over the years and iam getting a sense of thrill that i might get back into something i havent done in years.
Charcoal drawing, maybe painting....
As a day job i work (or did until last month ) in a jewellery workshop. I manage the workshop, deal with clients and merchants. I make pieces in my own time but iam not technically a jeweller.
I do do a lot of orignal design work. Mainly solataire rings. I work up ideas on paper and then produce 3d CAD models. I show the boss get some feedback and if he reckons they are good we get them cut into wax using 3d milling machines or 3d printers.
I reckon this is a good time to spend some time doing CAD work.
My boss is fantastic. I've got a job to go back to after all this and lots of support for my own projects.
My family is great too. They have been throughout the whole thing. This helps immensely.
Anyway i'll post up pics of anything i do.
Cheers.

hmmm....I also write. Or i did when i was younger. Many people i've talked to over the years i've had cancer asked me if i write. Or tell me that i should.
The act of writing posts such as these on forums help me understand things a lot better in my own mind so i beg your tolerance . BUt as for a formal undertaking. I'll think on itArt has now be-comeSim-ply an ex-cuse to sitIn the Sun . What Fun!BC-haiku

Ben... just relax and do the other artwork for awhile plenty of time for the shed in a month or so meanwhile design some furniture and stuff you can get stuck into when its over
Ive got a flamin shyteload of sketches Ive drawn up (freehand) over the last 8 months with my knee and finger issues... and as Im getting bedder and spending more time out there after being given my shed keys back Im actually starting to make some!!
Just steady as you go mate... an old saying us old pharts tend to say around here is "steady steady catchy monkey" meanin slow and easy and it will come to you... see watch a monkey... whats the best way to catch a monkey? a jar and patience... the monkey will steadily grow more and more self assured and curious as time passes just wait and one day that little buggar will come to the jar and stick his dopey hand in... now once its in and hes grasped the peanut or whatever youve put at the bottom of the jar he WONT let go... and youve got him!... so the idea is that if you go steady and slow take the time and wait it out you will get there
All the best
