Angry Hard Trash Collection and Ferals

OK, as some of you may know I threw a helluva lot of hardware and software out on the nature strip for an upcoming Council hard garbage collection. There were boxes full of daughter-boards (nw cards, gfx cards, etc.), boxes full of hard-drives, other boxes full of assorted cables, modems, printers, monitors, etc, etc. As you might gather, it was pretty well organised even if it was 'trash.' So why is it that every night about dusk I have to go out and waste half an hour cleaning up the nature strip?

Why do these mongrel ferals picking over the pile have to dump the box of nw cards on the ground? Do they really think I may've mislaid a $50- note in the bottom of the box? I mean, it doesn't take much to see that it's full of 'puta cards and that's all. Oh, and the boxed sets of SW. DBase III & IV, Framework, Lotus 1-2-3, etc., etc, each in it's original box. All ya gotta do is open the box and look inside... then put the box back when you realise that all that's in there is what's written on the outside. THERE'S NO BLOODY NEED TO THROW THE CONTENTS ALL OVER THE SERVICE ROAD!!

It's not like the stuff is hard to sort through... the only way to make it any easier would be to set up display cases! (Except I know some mongrel would tip everything onto the ground and disappear with the cases instead. Even if they were dyna-bolted to the pavement. )

Some bloke pinched a couple of boxes full of assorted leads, lengths of SCSI ribbon, etc., etc. That's fine mate, I have no problems at all with that. But you know those cables you cut off the backs of all the monitors, printers and scanners? You moron, all you had to do with most of 'em was unplug 'em! Could've done it in less time than it took you to find the pliers in your car. (From the hash you made of it, I doubt you used decent snips. Here's a hint: buy some decent tools! )

Now, I have no problems whatsoever with people skiving off with this stuff. You could pull up out front complete with a trailer and load it 'til the tyres burst for all I care... It is being thrown out and I am a turner after all... so I've been known to go skip-diving and gutter sniping on the odd occasion.

But for God's sake, show some manners! What's happening out the front of our place is no different to vandalism. Maybe I should set up a camera to snap the number plates and then, next hard garbage day, do the rounds myself looking for the culprits... then smash'n'break everything in sight and defecate on top for good measure?

Sorry... but I didn't get in until 11-ish tonight and I was not pleased at what I saw. I feel a little bit better now...

    But not by much! [sigh]

I agree with you Skew. It is good to know that someone can make use of what we consider junk and they should consider it as a gift.

To rubbish the nature strip of someone who has done you a favour gives an insight to how these people think - not much different to the examples demonstrated by some of our large corporates. They go to other countries, trash and pollute the place for their own profits. and then consider themselves as an astute organisation.

It seems to be the attitude throughout the "modern world" at all levels. Greed and selfishness prevail unfortunately.

Thanks Martrix, you really know how to rub it in, dontcha? I hadn't given a moment's thought to going down that path. Shame on me!

I don't s'pose you know if they do pickups? The site only mentions drop-offs. I may have another dozen or so systems to dump, some complete but just "old" and I really would prefer to see 'em go to new uses rather than be trashed over by &#$%wits.

Sorry mate. Can imagine how pi$$ed you must have been.

Haven't used those guys, but wouldn't hurt to smash an email to them, or better yet, give them a ring. Wouldn't want to head over there with a car load of gear and then return home with a car 3/4 full with gear they wouldn't take!

Got a bunch of old comp gear here thats I need to dispose of soon, so let us know how you go if you get in contact with them.

I had a similar experience some years back.
Had a clean up before I moved from one shop to another.
I ordered a big Skip bin & ran an advert in the paper.
I laid all the old computer gear out on tables & all around the parking lot & I threw all the rubbish, cardboard, packing, etc in the skip.
The $17 advert in the paper took more junk away than the $55 skip bin but while I wasn't looking, some dill got in the skip bin & ripped open all the cartons of crappy packing & poured bloody packing beads out everywhere & then pizzed of & left the packing blowing all around the car park.
    Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

Similar problem at the last cleanup except that the feral wanted the boxes I'd put stuff in and just empted them on the footpath.
One guy did knock on the door and ask if he could take a couple of the bulkier items, I was happy to give him a hand to load them.

Not that I know of... it wouldn't surprise me though, as we are only a 15min walk from there.

I must admit I'm guilty of scrounging roadside cleanups, but I make an effort to keep it tidy when I do.

Neighbours tossed a washing machine the same as ours, so I took out the pump, timer & motor. I made sure it was neater than when I started, and they appreciated it.

I can't believe this world we live in - why can't people consider others? It's like clothes in the shop, they chuck them back on any rack. All it takes is 2 seconds to put it where it came from. People have zero consideration these days.
