Dazzler, it is a VS Commonwhore (statesman) with Variomatic. I pulled the rack pinion and solenoid assembly apart and found what looks like an orange spacer or seal which sits on top of the sliding sleeve around the pinion has dientegrated. I did not notice at the time that a steel split spacer came out of it as well. Can I get the orange spacer (seal??) as a separate part and where does the steel spacer go in relation to the the orange spacer? The problem appears to have been the solenoid could not travel due to being blocked from moving with debris from the spacer. I want to replace the spacer and put it all back in the car. It has done only 100,000 and has no leaks and the bush on the left side has no play so I don't see any reason to go into it any further. I doubt that the debris has gotten outside the pinion housing and into the pump though I will flush it in any case. Your help would be appreciated.
