Timber selection for driveway gates
Hi
I am making some driveway gates, the gates will have a metal frame at the back and timber screwed to the frame. What would be the best timber to use to give a good looking finish. 2 x gates 1100mm width each and 1800mm high. The front panels would be butted together and around 75mm wide each panel.
cheers

Hardwood, Meranti or Western Red Cedar lining boards.
WRC are more weather durable but are very soft and prone to mechanical damage.
I'd use hardwood though meranti's ok but it can be a bit soft.

If your going to use a steel frame buy a cheep buggared second hand roller door in whattever colorbond you desire and cut and fit that over the frame... looks great the ones I made about 10-12 years back at a mates place in Carnarvon are still going great
Use the timber for something else! says he whos thinking of a 60mtr long old growth timber plank fence for the front fenceline ...but then I cant stand wire strand fences cheep nasty farm fences suck in a major way
