The freezer trick didn't work. Bugger. I will wait for Saturday.

I wouldn't hold my breath though - that "click of death" is a killer. (yeah - ok, bad time for a pun)
Had a drive a few years ago start doing it, and I took it apart to find out what it actually was. It is the arm that holds the drive heads slamming into the centre column.
Will still have a look of course, but....
I'll bring an external case, and a couple of programs I typically use - Spinrite and File Scavanger."Clear, Ease Springs"
