    Default Powerpoints near the sink- how close?

    Hi There,

    I have moved into a new unit and have noticed the powerpoints are extremely close to the sink.

    They are approximately 100mm from the edge of the bowl, and about 100mm above the counter. The distance from the spout would not be more than 200mm. Can anyone tell me if this is in accordance with the electrical safety standards. The unit is in Sydney.

    Thanks

    Antcom,
    They are deffinately not in accordance with AS3000.
    The power point should not be installed within 150mm from the edge of the bowl and 400mm above the bowl/bench surface.

    Unless they are protected by a RCD with a residual current rating not exceeding 30mA; and
    have automatic switching and are incorporated in a shaver supply unit complying with AS/NZS 3194; or
    it's in a cupboard that's going to stay shut.

    Well that's what AS/NZS 3018:2001 says.

    AS3000:2000 says,

    the bit about auto switching and shaver supply; or
    protected by RCD; and
    in a cupboard.
    Somewhere in the translation from AS3000 to AS3018 the ands and the ors have been swapped.

    Ah well in that case you would have ended up where you were supposed to be going not where you thought you were going.
