Query re building code and smoke detectors
Hi all
Can any one tell me where to find current requirements and smoke detectors.
I understand the requirements are for 1 or 2 ? smoke detectors also powered by mains
Is there anything else I need to be aware of?
Thanks
Doug

As I understand it there should be a mains powered smoke detector outside each bedroom.
We have 5 bedrooms, but there are 2 pairs of bedrooms with their doors close together, so each pair of doors got 1 smoke detector.
The master bedroom is at the opposite side of the house and has its' own smoke detector.
The requirements are probably described in you state's building code ( they couldn't possibly be the same in each state, would put too many bureaucrats out of work!)

Just googled "smoke alarms" and one of the first hits was a link to the NSW Fir Brigade requirements for smoke alarms, showing pretty much as I outlined above.
There are also links to Randwick City Council and various others.
For some reason I can't cut and paste the addresses

Here is my answer from a building studies diploma assignment lifted from the BCA.
The smoke alarms must comply with AS 3786 and be mains powered. There must be at least one on each level and if the level contains bedrooms then one must be in any hallway serving bedrooms and one must be between the bedrooms and the remainder of the storey or any other storey.
