Never saw it or read it, but it sounds like something from a Tennessee Williams character. And I don't think I've every said anything original anyway. I first heard that from my grandmother.
Have to say as I kid, I never heard one word (damn) without the other (yankee).
Still have no idea what outback was referring to.

Actually, I think "damn yankees" came from a Bugs Bunny cartoon, where Yosemite Sam was a confederate, with his bulldog with tiny back legs called Belvedere ("Oh Belvedere, come heah boy") and the beagle/bassett type dog was a yankee trying to replace Belvedere as the Plantation hound.
