    Angry Frigitt client

    G'day,

I feel like a good rant. I've got one client in particular that pings me off. A simple poxy press ad for her client and I will get 10 emails, no joke, from her:

can you change the copy, I got it wrong.

can you change the copy I used the wrong tence in the word

    can you change the brown

what's the CMYK makeup of the brown

can you make it a yellowy brown (when the brown has a mojority of yellow already in it, i.e. 42%)

is the press ad the right size, (yes as per your email)

and all her friggit emails are always marked as URGENT, because she forgets the newspaper deadlines.

    For friggits sake woman!

When I print off the PDF, the colours are muddy. (Yes, I sent you a high res PDF, but it depends on what print setting you are using a paper as to how accurate the print is (she has my old G5, so I know if the Mac is set up correctly and I've told her plenty of times how to set what setting for prints etc., but she's so friggit dumb  )

The colour doesn't look very nice on my monitor (no, becasue yo're using a carp monitor that isn't calibrated)

The after all the emails I just get another one in from her for the poxy p/ad and after all her carp, I get this:

"We think this ad is outstanding. please can you send it on.

    Many thanks

    Coral"

did I get all the stupid emails from you regarding colour etc.! Arg!!!!

So, that was my day. The rest was good - a lunch and some ales witha client, and I get the above from her for 2 hours to kill the day. Bring on Friday. Tomorrow I'm helping out SIL with some plastering and said client can go sod off.
I make things, I just take a long time.

    Just got another email:

The colour that came up on my screen looked gorgeous so I guess that was what I thought we would get. It was 408pc but you said that was too light. It has a nice undertone to it and fits beautifully with the picture. As long as the brown is not a baby poo brown or muddy murky brown and has nice life in it then yes I TRUST YOU. Cheree at Emmaus was very happy also with the 4655 as it is.

    Over to you

    Coral"

    !

Email her and state very clearly.
Each design change will add an extra $25 to the final cost.
All work that must be scrapped when you require a design change will be charged for at my going rate.

Don't you just hate it when people disrespect your creative talents and disempower you by not allowing you free reign within their design brief?

How much better is it when you have a client that allows you that free reign and gives you the space to spread your creative wings....

How's that Waldo, feel better after some empathy?
    Cheers,

C'mon Waldo, shape up, she just wants you to do what she wants, the tricky part is , she doesn't know what that is, until after you don't do it.

She's a woman. I think that explains it.

My wife is in advertising and does lots of corporate adds and tv adds for some folks as well.

She reckons that some client are just thick as pig dung and dont know their elbow from their earhole. They just like to make changes for the sake of making changes so they can feel important and justify their own employment to their own superiors.

She said SNAFU to you Waldo and feels your pain.

    G'day,

Thanks Clinton, you can be my client if you like.

Ianab, the thing is, when it goes to press it will turn out a differnet colour from what it should be, do I care? No.

Echindna, she's well aware of that and the invoice will reflect that, plus each email I send her is charged out at $16.25.

Barry, you'd think so. She quit her job from sales in a local newspaper group and knows squat about running anything, least of what advertising is. Every bit of copy she writes reads like anything else she's done for another client. I used to care about that, but not now I just do the p/ads and invoice her.

    Outback, that's basically about it.

Doughboy, the added problem is while you can educate some clients, or don't need educating, there are always those that do and they can be the hardest clients to work for, for various reasons. I love my job, heck I'm the boss, but some clients can really stretch it at times. As I'm sure your wife will testify to.

    I'm much calmer now.

That's it in a nutshell, Waldo. The "two changes allowed and then I charge extra" rule I used when I was in the game didn't work to keep the really awful clients at bay. They would just keep on and on until you wanted to throttle them. You would have thought we were producing War and Peace instead of some "buy this widget" claptrap.

    Life's too short, mate.
    Cheers,

    Bob

It's not restricted to your field either mate.

You ought to try working in IT with people who know nothing about computers/Internet/anything really.

My pet hate: I was trying to do x and it threw me out. It's a bloody web page, how can it throw you out? What did it throw you out of? With any luck, next time it will be the window.

Or "it had an error". What was the error? "I can't remember. I think it said something, but I didn't write it down".

    Nah, you've got it easy
