    Default rusty roof

Hi, I've got an old house with a metal roof. Where the sheets overlap there is a reasonable degree of corrosion I presume due to rainwater getting in or condensation.

I'm saving up to do an extension and so don't particularly want to replace the sheets yet as I'll need to mess about with roof line in a couple of years (if I save well).

I'm proposing to try sealing the edges of the sheeting with silicon or bitumen paint to get the roof to last a few more years and want to know a few things.

Is it an easy job (i.e. weekends work)?

Are there any potential pitfalls or complications I'm likely to have overlooked?

Can I just seal the outside edges or do I need to do the inside as well to stop condensation getting in?

ps I love the website, only just come across it and already found the answers to many questions that have been bugging me.

if its plain old corrogated iron just paint it with some silver killrust or similar paint, it'll last until you replace it. Its rusting probably due to age more than anything

I uased a bitumen based paint on the roof of the shed at home and it seems to be hold the water out but I'm going to have to kill rust it as well.

Thanks guys. I'm hoping to get away with just doing the overlaps of the sheeting as the bulk is still in bearable condition.

Probably spray in the fish oil antirust stuff where the rust exists and then use the bitumen paint to stop more water getting in.

Won't bitumen paint look awful in stripes on the roof top, or is it possible to do discretely?
