We're squeaky, not just because of the members but also in spite of them. We're squeaky, mostly because of the Mods and Admin.

We need more moderating because we currently get over 5 million hits a month. Along with those hits we get more than our fair share of idiots, morons, and spammers who need to be watched and culled etc. to keep this a great place for you to visit.

If it wasn't for the tireless work of the moderators and admin there wouldn't be as many woodwork related posts, because every thread would be overrun with spam and adds from bastards selling , mobile phones, little blue pills, holidays, dodgy real estate and investment deals and a whole lot more.

A team of fair, evenhanded, and impartial moderators is essential to the success of Woodwork Forums. Without them we wouldn't be rated # 1 by Google and many other search engines when you do a search for woodwork.

More than 150 hours a week of work every week, up front and behind the scenes is done by our dedicated team of Moderators and at least another 60 or more by the administrators.

The position of Super Moderator is one of extreme trust and I don't take lightly the choosing of those I will eventually ask to to take on the job. Especially in light of past events. I weigh up all the pro's and con's of many prospective members (it could be anyone) before asking them to come on board as a moderator.

The chosen few have to be willing and able to sacrifice a substantial part of their free hours to keep an ever watchful eye on the forums. They are all very special people who take on the position with the full knowledge that it is a completely voluntary, frustrating and mostly thankless job that may alienate them from former friends and put them in the firing line of all manner of idiot.

They have to walk a fine line between being a welcome member of the forums and being despised as an upholder of rules and decorum etc. They often have to give up their freedom to join in the fun as a member of the great unwashed in preference to sitting back and watching on for fear they may have to edit one of their friends and be sniped at for doing so.

There are many dozens of posts from spammers, political activists and all sorts of other weirdo's that never see the light of day or are deleted within minutes of being put on because of behind the scenes work done by Admin and the Super Mods. Because it is mostly goes unseen there is a general feeling that we don't need them. You have no idea just how wrong you really are.

With the forum growing at around 10% every couple of months, it is feasible that we will have around 10 million hits by Christmas next year. This will mean more mods yet again.

All of my Administrators, Super Moderators, have been chosen for their specific abilities and their undeniable passion and love for these forums.

You don't have to like them, you don't have to respect them, ALTHOUGH YOU BLOODY WELL SHOULD, you don't even have to talk to them if you don't wish. However a thank you from time to time would (I'm sure) be most welcomed.

Uncalled for posts like this (now deleted one) won't be tolerated even though they may be done in jest.
    <TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=6 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=alt2 style="BORDER-RIGHT: 1px inset; BORDER- 1px inset; BORDER- 1px inset; BORDER-BOTTOM: 1px inset">So from this I can only gather that:
    Wendy wears no undies.
Al makes a big motion
Stuart is a namby pamby Triton user

    </TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Posts like this and the multitude of time wasting, hijacking, irrelevant, drivel, abusive, degrading, sexist, antisemitic, extreme political, racist, etc, etc are the other reason we need more moderation. Hundreds of these absolutely useless and irrelevant posts are deleted every week. Yet still we have thousands not yet removed and clogging up out server space. Does anyone really need to ask why we need mods or admin.

I would like to welcome on board our 4 new Super Moderators:
Groggy (Greg) - Scooter (Sean) - Daddles (Richard) - Rufflyrustic (Wendy)

They join our existing Super Moderators:
Stuart (Stuart) - ozwinner (Al) - Wood Butcher - (Rowan)
And exhisting moderators for specific forums:
chromis (Home Renovations) - Teejay (Inspirational Web Sites) - LineLefty (Best of the Best)
    Administrators:
ubeaut (Neil - Forum owner) - (Ian) - cyc (Steven - Tech support) - Shane Watson (Shane is recently married and on extended sabbatical)

Personally, I'm a bit surprised at some of the posts in this thread.

After all, we're playing in Neil's backyard and 'tis entirely up to him who he hires as gardeners, watch-dogs, whatever. As to who is a moderator, it shouldn't really matter... unless you're one of those people who only dares to thumb their noses at authority when their backs are turned!

One forum I used to haunt, once upon a time, had SS moderators. Whoever they were in public, they had secret alter-ego accounts for their moderation duties... I think it's fair to say there was no sense of "community" on that forum. Paranoia, yes... community, no. At least here we know who's carrying a big stick and, let's face it, they're really a bunch of big softies.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

Hats off and triple group greenies to all admins and mods. This is by far the cleanest & friendliest forum I have been a part of since the web started.

How about the mods post some of the "best of the worst" (with modifications to rude bits and names removed etc) every month or so? Could be good for a laugh?

Hats off to all the powers that be, Administrators and the Moderators of all degree. Neil made many good points. Perhaps that post should be available for wider reading.
Until then, I had been wryly smiling that the Friday threaders had managed to get going on a day other than Friday.
This is both an incredibly friendly forum and an extraordinary resource, probably because so many are willing to give so freely of themselves.
It is almost inevitable that the Mods have to temper some of the rsponses they make, in keeping with their responsibilities so thank you for being willing to make sacrifices to keep this Forum as effective as it is.

All the talk about Mods reminds me of the period when they had Mods and Rockers in England. Ringo Starr was asked which he was and he replied, "I'm a Mocker." Answers like that undoubtedly got him his big break, becoming the narrator on the "Thomas the Tank Engine" series.

I've just been through this thread and read every post. Buggered if I can see where anyone had even the vaguest of digs at the moderators old or new. Most of it is just off-topic waffle. Maybe the insulting stuff was all deleted?

If any mods felt insulted, and I can't for the life of me see why they would have, then they need to develop tougher skins. I'm sure we all appreciate what they do and that they do it voluntarily and in their own free time. People should be judged by their actions. A mod should be just as open to criticism as anyone else, notwithstanding that they have extra responsibilities, but not because they are mods.

I personally don't care who is and who isn't a mod. I'm not going to tiptoe around anyone because they have the power to alter or delete my posts or ban me from the forum. That's a matter for them and their conscience.

As for drivel, hijacking etc. it's up to the forum owner to decide if it's tolerated or not. But make it clear one way or the other. It either is or it isn't.

You could always do it "Pro Bono"

Congratulations to the members who are now being elevated to the high office of Moderator. Keep up the good work.

We may not always like your decisions but someone has to do it and I don't hold it against you.

Silent C I agree with you, I didn't see any criticism of the moderators or administrators, just some banter to fill in a monday.

Anyway, its good to see the moderators "outed" by Neil. They should be made public and it should be announced,as it should be seen as a valued and well regarded "position" (probably not the best description) within the community that is this forum.

Hell, If I was a moderator I would want everyone to know and I would be loudly and proudly "virtually" strutting around with a badge on my chest (maybe I would borrow it from ozwinners avatar).

    New mods? - Congratulations.
