Domain Name Registration
Hi all
I am wanting to register a domain name. Have googled and found lots that allow you to register.
Is there anything to watch out for before I register with a particular company?
At this stage I just want the domain name and over the next couple of months set up a web page using that domain name.
Should I, or could I, do it through my current service provider?
If I register it with one can I host it on another.
And yes I am very confused

Domain names
dazzler
There are any number of companys willing to assist the registration of a domain name. I'd go directly to the source and not through an ISP, I used distributeit.com.au and found them to be very helpful!Tony Ward

I use www.planetdomain.com (a subcompany of iprimus.com.au)
I have registered about 6 or so domains with them now, and find them to be a useful service, with good extra features such as mail redirects and URL redirects. Have used them now for about 4 or so years.
You can also buy server space from them at a very good price if needed.
They have the whole range of domain categories .com.au .com .org.au .net.au etc etc."Clear, Ease Springs"

Dazzler,
The .com.au domains are quite a lot more expensive than the basic .com/net/org/info tags
I've been using dotster.com for years, and pay $5.00 per year for redirecting the domain name to my ISP hosted sites.
Another cheap source is godaddy.com which does a .com registration plus redirect for about $8.00
Some people really want that ".au" tag, but trust me, no one anywhere else in the world cares, and if you want your site to appear as an Australian one in the google.com.au searches, just create a "country" metatag. If you don't know what that is, don't worry about it, you will eventually!
Cheers,
P

If you do not mind a .ms domain then you can use cydots as a redirector to your home page on your service providers server. FREE

Honestly, unless you HAVE to go with an alternative look very closely at http://www.dreamhost.com/hosting.html or http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/default.asp
Dreamhost is definately the best deal in the world tonight. I mean that. I am a reseller for godaddy (through a different domain and business) and there is no way I can provide a deal like dreamhost is doing now. Here are a couple of highlights:
US$9.95/ month (12 months in advance)- but see below
1 free domain name (.com, .net, .org, etc)
Storage at startup: 200GB!
Monthly Band 2TB!
Best control panel in the business
Just about everything you will need is unlimited. Take a look.
Oh, and right now they are giving you US$99 (wont last long) credit off your sign up, so that is (9.95 x 12= US$119.40) -US$99 so the total is only US$20.40 with a domain and 12 monthst hosting. The following year will go up to normal rates, but by then you can either shop around or you will be happy to stay.
You are simply not going to find a better deal anywhere. If you have to use a .au domain just buy it somewhere and host it on dreamhost.
I have been using dreamhost for 2 years and highly recommend them to you (I even host my competing domain business on their servers )

Another vote for Godaddy.com Have been using them for years, easy to work with, redirects, mail, cheap, etc. Have about 6 or 8 domains. Just fight through all the "suggested" add-ons at checkout and you're good to go.
Cheers,
Bob
