Turn About...... It's FANTASTIC!

A chance to do your own thing. Bring your lathe and turn wood. Along the way you might learn something or get a chance to help or show someone a few things. No matter what; you will meet many wonderful people, some old friends, make new friends and generally have a ball.

Basic itinerary as I see it follows:

Friday: Arrive > set up your lathe and turn wood > lunch if any left > turn wood > dinner > turn wood, have a swim, talk turning and other such rubbish with other like minded people, drink grog (if that way inclined) > supper > more of the same > go to bed in air-conditioned room with en-suite.

Saturday: Arise to fresh country air, , shower, shave & shampoo > big country breaky > turn wood > morning tea > turn wood > lunch > turn wood > afternoon tea > turn wood > dinner > turn wood, have a swim, talk turning and other such rubbish with other like minded people, drink grog (if that way inclined) > supper > more of the same > go to bed in air-conditioned room with en-suite.
Sunday: Arise to fresh country air, , shower, shave & shampoo > big country breaky > put final bids in on Silent Auction> turn wood > morning tea > turn wood > start pack-up > pack up and head for home.

Thats a very rough breakdown of the weekend. The meals are fantastic, the company is great, the facilities are superb. There is also a swimming pool , TV in each room (not that you'll find time to look at it), walking tracks and lots more. Saturday shopping trip into Wagga Wagga for anyone who wants to go. Some of the ladies who aren't turning do a variety of other crafts.

U-Beaut products available at special rates. Beenatree Crafts have a stall with everything imaginable by way of turning supplies, for sale. Timber available and a whole lot more.

Did I mention the food is great, no one leaves hungry, no one ever complains.

An excellent weekend. I recommend it most highly for woodturners of all kinds, from raw novice to a full blown professional. Ladies most welcome, this isn't a blokey weekend, it is a weekend for both men and women. Many couples attend and use it as a starting point for a week or so on the road.

Similar to Down Under Turn Around which had its 10th Anniversary 2 weeks ago. Wagga Wagga Turn About and SATurn both sprang from that one and have stayed true to the original style of unstructured weekend of turning fun where Proserpine Turnout which also sprung from these a few years later, has from what I can see, been made a bit more structured with races etc.

All are excellent weekends and I can highly recommend them even though I have not attended Proserpine Turnout. But I'm sure our roomies Ken & Helen Wraight will attest to the fun had at Proserpine Turnout.

There's always the tools snobs, but there'd be the people who, seeing yours, would think "wish I'd brought mine."

And everybody inbetween could do with some comic relief.

From what I see at the shows, and what I read on here, think there are a lot of tool snobs out there....

Not a tool snob in site at Wagga Wagga Turn About or Down Under Turn Around, just a whole heap of woodturning nutters (tragics) having a ball, turning on what ever they have, from home made or cheap 'n' nasty to top of the line. No one cares it's not the snobbery they're there for it's the turning

78 lathes at Phillip Island for Down Under Turn Around this year. Like to see another event top that one.

I'd certainly be keen to go to one, but you can't tell me that there wouldn't be a quite a few raised eyebrows at my GMC lathe!

Sorry - wasn't implying the Turn Abouts would be full of tool snobs - moreso the Wood Shows etc. Mention the lathe brand to anyone at Peninsula Wood Turners, and they can't get away from you fast enough.

Nope, no problems, because people have to travel to get there, a lot of small & homemade lathes turn up.
I've seen some lathes a lot more humble that your GMC.

It is not a show to be judged.
It is not a competition.
It is just a mob of turners spending a weekend together, some are just looking, some are just there for a weekend away from the chores at home. (How else could you get 2 full days of turning? )
We swap ideas, show off new toys & get some pointers from each other.
We meet people, make new friends & have a good time.
It is not like a weekend where you pay to sit & watch pros.
It is a weekend where you can be the pro if you want & try out your demonstrating skills.

I went for a day visit to "U-turn @ Q-turn" that the Warwick & District Woodcrafters (formally Allora Woodcrafters) used to run and there was at least one person there with a GMC style lathe. I was actually amazed by the work he was doing.:eek: If nothing else, worth going to for the fellowship and great times always had. Wish I could go
