    Default pitched pergola roof

    howdy blokes
im having a bit of a problem at the moment.
i am going to build a pergola out back. its going to have a thatched roof.
therefor requires a piched roof. im planing on 35 deg. its 7.7m long by 5.4m wide. i have that decks and pergolas by that stain bloke but it does not mention pitched roofs so i thought i would ask the experts.

    # 1.. what size beams at the sides would i need? they will be suported by a pole at each end and one in the middle(3 total)at a total length of 7.7m
#2.. what size rafters? i calculate that they woud be 3.3m long each side. for a span of 5.4m

i have spent hours doing serches of the forum, its full of good info but did not find anything that covered what i needed.
Im thinking of doing it in hardwood that would be stained or varnished.
im 42 years old so i figer its got to last 30 years max, after that i dont care cos i'll be giving the nurses hell in a home(if i make it!)

    thanks for your help
    Paul

    Lbudgie,

After reading thorugh your post i reckon that you might want to get hold of a copy of Alan Staines book. Building decks and pergolas. It will have all the spaning tables that your looking for. I think bunnings have them for about $25 give or take. As well as that I reckon there are a a few members that may be able to give you a fair bit of advice here as well.

    G'day Budgie,
Sounds pretty similar to the size of my roof, I am pretty sure I used 250 x 50 for the side beams and 200 x 50 (or maybe 150) for the rafters...all in pine...not absolute sure though...not at home to check at the moment...but if you are using hardwood I wouldn't think they need to be as big as that...
mine has a colourbond roof...but I am not an expert, I am sure others would have different opinions.

    Hi Paul

Have a look here and you will find various span tables for timber. Just click on the link you require e.g. Roof Span tables.
