Spraying concrete tile roof

After some information on spraying a concrete tile roof. What is the best type of sprayer to use, electric or compressor fed sprayer.
Also what paints are available in Australia that are suitable for this application.
Anyone done this job themselves and were they happy with the quality of the finished job??

Haven't done it yet - but planning to. What I have gleaned so far in my preparation is - step 1 pressure clean the tiles Step 2 replace broken tiles and repoint capping where necessary step 3 seal with one coat of sealer step 4 apply two top (coloured) coats.

I deal direct with a paint manufacturer/trade suppler here in Brisbane (Luxury Paints - Dara) and they advise me they supply 4 or the 5 roofing refinished in Brisbane. So much for each having their own unique special super finish !

For my roof the cost for sealer and paint will be less than $400 - far cry from the $3000 quoted

Thanks for the post. I want to do mine as well. I've heard that cost saving isn't the only benefit. Apparently a lot of the people who do it don't do a very good job. The "key" (excuse the pun), is in the prep work and the sealer.

I'd be pretty sure that an airless sprayer would be the way to go. You can hire these and they throw the paint on without much overspray. They're also easy to use. Just pour the paint in, aim and spray.

With overspray, an air gun would end up painting your cars and swing set and BBQ and garden and so on at the same time (maybe even SWMBO if she is slow at hanging clothes on the line).

I'm looking at this job myself. Try the hire shops near you, some of them hire the bigger pressure cleaners and sprayers. Even better hire the gear and do it on a weekend and go halfs with ya neighbour, help each other and keep the cost down. After you pressure keep one part, he follows behing and re-points (make sure you use flexipoint and don't pull out the old concrete unless it falls out.)

Old style tiles can be obtained from a salvage yard in Bayswater, the name slips my mind at present, so I;ll get back you you. If you pull an old tile from the roof flip it over and look on the underside, the name of the tile should be stamped on it.

Guys I did our roof just on 2 years ago. I didn't know about using a sealer at the time and that meant I used alot more paint than I had planned for. I used Dulux Roofpaint onto concrete tiles and used my Karcher to blast them first. Hired an airless sprayer from Kennards - around $180. Worked well. I think the sealer would make a big difference and might mean I need to do it again in a year or so.....dang..... But much cheaper than getting in a professional.

I am also looking into painting my roof myself after being told various things from roof restorating companies and also being told that it doesn't matter what paint is used that it will only look good for 5-10 years because of UV etc. That's probably fair enough. Why would the paint last any longer than exterior paint that goes on the rest of the house. So I can't really justify paying 2000-2500 for five years of my roof looking good.

These are the paints and comments that I've heard;

Dulux: "Big company with a big name'; "Thick paint that is hard to spray on". "Not a specialised roof paint"
Nutech: "A cheaper paint" (Is this why it's popular with Roof restorators?)
Regent: A small company in Melbourne that started from a couple of guys that used to work at Nutech. "Paint becomes part of the tile", "Started washing off in 18 months" (This could have been due to the preparation)
Premier top coat: "We don't use Nutech or Regent. We used to use Regent but found that Premier was even better)

Bunnings told me to use paving paint but this is probably very expensive and won't necessarily last any longer.

So after hearing all this and getting very confused, I am trying to source Premier Topcoat. Does anyone know who makes this paint?

Also, I have been told that if you don't use a pressure cleaner properley that you can get water inside the roof space and ceiling? Does anyone know if there is any special way that you need to direct the pressure cleaner?

The fun starts this weekend, have a waterblaster ready to go for Saturday and then will paint the following weekend. Have decided on nutech paints (tileflex 2000). Have also decided to repoint the ridge capping myself, anyone got any pointers on doing this??
Also if anyone can help with the nozzle size best suited it would be much appreciated

We are in the process of looking at it also..We were looking at that solar guard which apparently is great for concrete roofing..We will use a sealer I think too but so far haven't been told that it is necessary, but defiantly food for thought for the using of less paint..Thanks for the info
