red gum clock

I have just recently completed a clock made from a red gum burl and is read to be finished off I am as i am new to woodworking I am unsure as what to finish it of with. I want to bring out the natural colours and grain but dont want it too glossy. I hope someone can help me

G'day Mick,

My preference with Red Gum is Danish Oil, liberally applies, left for ten minutes then the excess wiped off with a soft cloth. Repeat three or four times with a day between each application.

Then, after about a week, wax with uBeaut and buff.

Shellac works well too.

With redgum the choice of finish can markedly affect the final colour.

Oils tend to darken.
Shellac can reduce the redness a bit.
Water based clear is the closest to a natural timber colour.

Hi and welcome Scorpio,

I agree with Steve, except I use two coats about 10-20 minutes apart and friction seal going up the grades from 600 to 1500g. This may not be practical or best for burl. I would also finish with Traditional Wax. Gives a very warm inviting glow.
Another option is Organoil Interior finish. This won't give you the depth of colour that Danish oil will. Buffing when finished helps give a shine, but seems to vary a lot with ambient conditions and possibly even the phase of the moon , but I'd suggest Traditional wax again wax again for lustre.

Thanks steve Bob and rob for your advice. I had almost decided on using danish oil on the clock prior to asking for advice. so you have confirmed this I will go ahead thanks again
