Question: When using "hard burnishing' oil it's recommended to use a rotary machine - is a 'random orbital' sander OK, or must the process be orbital only?
I have a feeling I've wasted money on the oil.

Haven't read the instructions for hard burnishing oil but I think you will find the recomendation is to use a random orbital, not rotary or orbital.

It also depends on how big the piece you are working on is. If it's a small box for instance, you can get enough heat into the oil by hand rubbing. If it's a table however, forget it.
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

If you are using a ROS put the oil on then a piece of cloth then the ROS above and apply as if you are sanding the surface but with oil and cloth between the ROS and the job, this will put enough heat into the oil to give a good finish ......and cleans the paper on the Ros at the same time.
Random and orbital both work.
