    Default roof risers ?

can anyone out there settle a arguement i am having ?
a friend has been helping me rebuild a small room 4 mtres long x 2 1/2mts wide we are up to puting the roof frame ,flat sloping roof, in but hes saying that its ok to put the roof (bearers , risers ? ) in so that the wide side of the beam faces the floor ie 4 x2 , or whatever they are, has the 4 in side facing the floor i say that it should be the wide side vertical and the 2in side parrell to the floor ?
which is the right way ?
    thks for any info

    This way:

    NOT this way:

    +--+
    +--+

I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

You are correct. Vertical orientation gives you greater load bearing capacity. But your friend may also get away with it if he is prepared to put more vertical supports than you would otherwise need. (See picture) But why bother?

It depends on whether you are talking about the rafters or the battens.
