Depends on your eyesight.

I reckon you set it to the most you can fit on the screen & still read comfortably.

If you can't read it, the resolution's too high ... the settings vary depending on whether I'm wearing my glasses, the amount of red I've drunk and whether the siamese is standing in front of the screen.

Seriously, if you can't read it, the resolution's too high. It's as simple as that.

I'd always recommend 1024 x 768, though as the above comments suggest it is about eye sight. I just loathe having to go up and down cos you can;t fit much on the screen with 800 x 600.

LCD's have a native resolution that you should stick to anything higher or lower than this and your screen will have to scale up or down accordingly.

LCD are nice and crisp with text when used at the correct resolution. that is where one pixel on your LCD monter is only showing one graphic pixel, if that makes sense. my 17inch at home is 12** by 1024 i think.

If you cant read your screen why not increase the font sizing?

This one here is a 17" (I think) set at 1200 x 1000 and it sits about 1 metre away from me.

Yes, my eyes are pretty good.

That and the Firefox/Thunderbird hot key for increasing font size is ctrl +...

I can't set it any lower as it goes stoopid on me and it sets itself off to one side, otherwise I'd set it to the next step down.

As wilco mentioned earlier, LCD monitors have a native resolution, which simply means the resolution that suits the screen best. The bigger the screen (17", 19" etc), the higher the resolution (1280x1024 for a 4:3 aspect ratio 17" LCD is typical). However, LCD screens are fine at lower resolutions, they just become noticably more pixelated as compared to a CRT monitor which shows no obvious pixelation when the resolution is lowered.

Its really a personal preference, I prefer to run my LCD at its native resolution as it looks much nicer, however if you struggle to read the text on the screen when it is set to its native resolution, lowering it is fine

As for refresh rates, when it comes to LCD monitors, I have no real idea about it. My LCD is set to 60hz and it works fine..
