How accurate does it have to be?
What sort of volts are you putting through it?

Maybe you can get something from a wreckers for an old car.
I think old Landrovers had an Ammeter in the dash & it was a 2 way meter, IE showed charge & discharge but it wasn't very accurate.

    G'day Pete,
Check out the local wrecking yards or any of the old pommie cars from the 50's, e.g. Austin, Morris etc. or some old tractors that have been left abandoned out in the paddocks. Anything that had a generator as the charging source usually had an ampmeter. I'll keep a lookout for one in my wanderings.
    Regards,
    Barry.

    Why?

    Better still, why not?

I have a whole 1960 series 2A Landrover in a horse paddock shed at my place if you are interested.

needs to be reasonably accurate for input power readings.
Its for a 400 watt max output 12vdc wind gen I use to assist the solar panels
I'm trying to see what is going in at the differnt wind speeds so I can calulate my usage and work out a battery bank with suitable reserve so as to avoid using the fossil fuel genny ....I dont like being ripped off under the guise of cyclone katrina ,iraq nth koreas missile program or any other excuse the iol cartel finds
I can see my solar input and need to see the wind input do finalise my system

Pete, you could try contacting Oatley Electronics, they are great for bits & pieces like this.

    Hi Pete.
I have a ampmeter from a car that goes to 30 amp +or-.

Send me your address by PM if you want it.

I assume it works as the needle jiggles around as though it will work.

    Al
