    Default groat

    A mate of mine goes fossicking for gold with a detector. Two weeks ago he came home with what he thought was a threepenny coin, commonly called a tray. On close inspection it was in fact a fourpence coin or commonly called a "groat". I have since found out about and actually seen a twopence coin, a one and a half pence coin and a quarter farthing coin. I never knew they existed. These coins were actually used in England. Has any one else heard of these or know of other old English coins? Apart from the half crown and crown.

    Farthing (quarter penny) were still in use in the 50's, halfpenny (pronounce hay penny) went on a lot later, and here too.
    Don't forget the guinea (21 shillings) which was around for a while and when not in use was still used for advertising:
    Black and White TV Brand 'A' 45 pounds, our price 42 guineas, which was of course not a massive saving but sounded good, bearing in mind that in the early 50's in the UK 3 pounds a week was not bad money for a labourer or unskilled worker.
    Then there was the 5 pound note, bigger than an A4 sheet, mind you not many people saw them so it was never a problem.
    Bit like a $100 note today

    I had a great wad of them recently. Yup. All MINE, MINE, MINE ... for the half hour it took to take them from the bank to the place tinkering with my Falchoon

    Me too but not for long.

    Mind you we will need to start finding some of them soon just to fill the car or buy some bananas - note I did say "or" :mad:

    They say that money talks - I would have to agree - up to a point - it only ever says one word to me and that is

    "Goodbye" :mad::mad::mad:

    Cliff, years ago I worked for a Dead (or is that Red) Sea Pedestrian, who broke a blokes $50 for a $5 sale as he only could come up with $4.98 in change

    That's what happens when you have a Falchoon.
    Is there anything easier done than said?
