Old buffer's observation
They say that a 'watched pot never boils'. Well, I can tell you from personal experience that it takes even longer if you don't turn the rotten thing on

In the old house, my favourite trick was to put a pot on the stove and turn on the wrong element, then walk away and wonder why it never boiled. We've got a gas stove in the new house
