Help - wrong colour bookshelves

Hi anyone

My husband ordered "Golden Cypruss" bookshelves without consulting me on the colour - they have arrived and are no match at all to our other furniture - darker colours - what can we do?
How hard is it to re do the whole thing?
Can you put anything over the top of it?
My husband says it is done in a coloured varnish and can't be fixed easilly.
We are having a big argument about it - looks like the chainsaw for the bookshelves - or maybe me!!
Unless anyone has a quicker solution.

If its solid timber you might have to take it back to the cabinet maker and consult them on changing the colour through refinishing. This won't be cheap.
If its a veneer "manmade" finish over mdf/chipboard, then there's not a lot you can do.

Lastly, you could go and buy some paint, or sell it and buy a new bookshelf, or get new furniture.

Does it really matter... chances are the hubby cant tell the difference in the shade (or at least won't admit it) - and you could think about muting the shade difference through other furnishings and lighting options

i.e. a dark oriental rug at the base of the bookshelf, or white 'hot' lights directed down on the bookshelf to wash out some of the colour, or reducing the wattage of the bulbs that throw light on the other furniture.

Timber is never going to match exactly, unless heavily stained. It is your other furnishings that will trick the eye to tie it all together.

Send the hubby and the bookshelves back to where they came from and ask for a replacement of both.

What was he thinking???? Clearly he wasn't!

There probably isn't much you can do without making a mess of it and probably ruining what you already have.

Try talking to the manufacturer or the shop where they were purchased and tell them hubby is colour blind and isn't normally allowed out on his own to make major purchases or decisions. Maybe they will take pity on you and replace it.

Welcome to the forum - you'll find a wealth of opinion and great information here. My question is: Do they really have to match? I understand if you are trying to have a perfectly matching group of pieces, but one thing that has stood out to me when looking at the books and magazines I have, is that most furniture in the best images, compliment each other but do NOT match - this gives the whole scene the feeling that objects have been purchased or found over time ...... but each to their own is certainly valid

Above all - have fun.....especially reminding hubby of his mistake!

Keep the furniture as it is.

Replace hubby with a newer model

Ask the manufacturer if they can spray another coat or two of finish with a toner in it to darken it up? easy
