Oiling Oregon
I`m making a outdoor setting out of oregon at the moment and want to oil it when finished. Does any one know of any tricks to get a dark oil finish. I`ve used linseed oil in the pass but dosn`t darken the wood as such. Made a portable babecue stand and oiled it using babecue oil which stained it to a light brown and came up quiet good. But was to expensive $20 for 1 litre from bunnings.
Basicaly is there way using lnseed oil and adding a stain to the linseed.
thanks

Go to your local paint shop and get some samples of their universal tinter in red, brown and black. Try mixing them in a small quantity of the oil until you get the desired colour. Keep a note of what you did to get the colour then multiply it till you have enough to do the job.
I guess $20 seems a bit hefty when you look at the price of a litre of Raw linseed (around $8.75) but then again, the BBQ oil, more likely than not, isn't just your odrinary common garden variety linseed oil with a bit of stain in it and in that case, I really don't think that $20 seems all that much to pay to get something that is the right colour and works.
2 litres should be enough to finish your setting. That's only $40 and is a very cheap finish. It would cost you closer to 10 times that if you were to get it professionally done.
Sounds like the oil you used may have been Organoil, that being the case there is a really big difference between it and common old linseed and I would go for the Organoil every time. The results will show a few years down the track.
Hope this is of some help.

had a look on the the tin, right is Organoil will shop around and try and get it in bulk. $20 for 500ml still abit rich but what you pay is what you get.
Thanks

I ended up using linseed oil boiled it and added 50% paint thinners came up a treat going to give a few more coats and continue doing so every month or so.
Is this enough to preserve the wood for outdoor use.
Thanks Goldy

I would not be confident that this would be exceedingly durable, and doesnt linseed oil turn black after a period outdoors?
Someone else maybe able to set us both on the right track here.Do or do not.....
Just try on a piece of scrap timber first.
