purchasing timber

Hi

Is timber sold at a standard length or can you buy it at just about any length? I will be doing some renovations at my house, installing doors moving walls etc and I'm not sure if I should calculate the approximate lengths I need for each job or should I purchase the longest pieces that I can get. What is more cost effective? I need timber for stud walls, architraves and skirting boards.

Usually sold in increments of 600mm ie 1200.1800.2400.3000.3600 etc etc
or 1.2m,1.8m,2.4m,3m,3.6m etc :eek:

MDF mouldings from bunnings (and I'm assuming everywhere else) come in 5.4m lengths. Which is perfect for doing a door and also means that skirtings can be done as a single length (so long as your walls are less than 5.4m obviously!)

depends on how much you need, I just bought a heap of primed treated pine from fowles timber in port melbourne, standard lengths 5.4m but because of how much I ordered I got the 3m lengths I needed.
