I would expect to know up, front, either way. Once I know I can make an informed decision if I want you to quote or not.
If you have a good reputation then it may make no difference.
I would expect a refund of the quote fee if you got the job.

How far do you travel for free quotes?
As far as the telephone.
I fix computers.
If they bring it to me, I won't charge them a quote fee if it is not worth fixing. If I think it is worth fixing & they decide to not go ahead, it will cost them $44 to get it back.Cliff.
If you find a post of mine that is missing a pic that you'd like to see, let me know & I'll see if I can find a copy.

I would never "expect" a charged quote, but if you were upfront about it, then I can make the decision on whether to get you to quote or not.
I do think that charging for a quote where you have to travel a significant distance is perfectly reasonable, but as Echidna says... It depends on your business. If you have plenty then you don't need to worry about potentially losing customers, if you lack customers, then maybe you need to be willing to travel further afield to generate custom - but that is less to do with the customer than with you really.

Depends on whether what you do is unique enough. If you're just a builder or a tradie, if you want the job, you can give me a quote but I wont pay you for it. There's plenty of people down here (Pambula/Merimbula) who can do the job without having to factor in travel.
The guy who did my termite treatment came down from Moruya to quote. But then he is down here a lot, so it wasn't a special trip for him. I expect he factors in the travel, but if I had chosen a different supplier, he would've gotten zip from me. I guess other people are paying for it."I don't practice what I preach because I'm not the kind of person I'm preaching to."
