    Default Timber Floor On Concrete

    Hi!

I am laying solid timber t & g floorboards onto a concrete floor using joists.
    The floorboards are 120mm x 22mm
    The joists are 22 - 23 mm

Under the joists will be a poly membrane

The joists will be fastened with 50mm splitz

Because the floorboards are 120mm I'm told I can't secret nail

Because the floorboards are hardwood I'm told I can't secret nail

Because the floorboards are 22mm and the joists are 23mm I don't have sufficient clearance for top nailing (Apparantly the joists need to be at least 1 1/2 the size of the floorboards ie. 35 - 40mm)

Has anybody top nailed a floor using smaller T nails and been successful.

I've been told I could cut 12mm ply and glue under joists and this would solve the problem but then I'd have to take down the ceiling fans or lose my head.

    Any recommendations would be appreciated.

    Default Timber Floor On Concrete

Hi! I got the info from timber.org and they say " only secret nail boards up to 85mm cover"

A floor layer said that because the wood was 120mm wide I can't secret nail and would have to put 2 nails in the top.

Boral Timber said, which everybody else seems to agree with, that the joists have to be 1 1/2 times the flooring depth to adequately put in a top nail without hitting the concrete and to hold the wood secure.

    Can I use a smaller T nail?

that rule is from AS1684 the timber framing code, i also think it has been transfered across into the timber flooring code.

it is industry practice to use ND brads 38mm with a 19mm flooring and 19mm hwd batten, also glue boards with ultraset.

its also common place to secrete nail first using a secrete nail gun this brings the boards in tight then go back and top nail.

what type of timber are you using.
