Australian substitute for American Cherry?
G'day folks,
My next project, after I've finished the pie cabinet (this weekend) will be a dining table, very similar to the one on page 8 of woodworkers journal, heirloom edition.
As with many American projects, this piece (and accompanying chairs and buffet) was made from sawn American Cherry. As I think that this timber suits the pieces very well, I'd like to enquire from the wood-wise amongst you if there is an approximately similar native timber that I could use?
I did get a quote on some WRC (which is rather different, I know), but at over $800 for the raw timber just for the table I'm still in a state of mild shock .
Any ideas?

Tasmanian Myrtle is about as close as you will get to cherry from Aussie timbers.

Myrtle was my guesstimate too.
Get in touch with our southern brothers, they have some amazing timber down there.
KevM, Tassman just to name a few.

One of these days I'll just HAVE to take a run down to Tassie.
My Audi won't be any good for collecting a heap of timber - soooo, anyone in Vic interested in doing a few days swap of a late model Audi A4 for a ute for a few days.
Al: you Can't fit a mixer on the back seat or in the boot
