    Default how long?

I planted a blue spruce (Pinaceae Picea pungens Engelm) the other day. My little off-sider, Jack, said "Pa, how long will it take to grow as tall as me?"
So I gave him a quiz. I put a nail in the trunk 6" from the ground. I then asked him how long it would take for the nail to be 48" from the ground if the blue cypress growns 1/2" a year.
He's still trying to work it out. Can you help him.

Depends on how big a piece of wood I want out of it.
I may be weird, but I'm saving up to become eccentric.

    gday
as trees grow from the top the nail will still be 6 inches from the ground no matter how tall the tree gets.

Mmmmm, in psychology it was common for people to come up and say 'my friend has a problem with...........', say no more

    answer
    (48- 6) / 2
    = 42 / 2
    = 84 years
so that means that the nail has to go 42" and is travelling at 1/2 inch per year

BZZZT. Wrong. Like I said, it depends on how big a piece of wood I want out of it. Once it reaches the right size, that nail will be on my workbench, where I can attack it with a decent set of pliers before ripping...
