Default Installing a Door + Jamb to hallway

I am thinking about Insalling a door in my hallway to block off the rear end of the house to main lounge area for heating and cooling,I was thinking of having a go at it my self,?my concern is on the partition side of the wall I cant find any studs{ with my stud finder }I know there will be a top and bottom plates, but the spot where i want the door to go, there arnt any studs to be found, has any one got an Idea of what I can do?
If I was to go with a carpenter what could i expect to pay for a job like this??

If your hall is approx 900mm wide and a 770 wide door is acceptable then you'll be able to fix a stud on either side directly over the gyprock, glued and nailed to top & bottom plates and the noggin. Then fix jamb to studs, easy

If that's no good then plan b will apply...

    On the subject:
Recently had a load of reno work done by carpenter/builder and noted now that door jam and stud there is thin air apart from the nails that attach.

I was always taught to pack out the nailed area ie slip packing of appropriate size between jam and stud then nail through the packing.

Has the theroy changed, was I taught wrong, or is this sloppy building?

The jamb should always be packed, but I did hear recently of a guy telling his subbies to to this to speed things up.This is one reason that tradesmen get a bad name...cowboys.
