hawaii lagoon progress thread
It is now around 8 weeks since putting any fulltime session in the workshop owing to the very cold snap we are having in the U.K. this year. In the workshop the temp. rarely rises above 5c and I put in clock yesterday that has one of those hygrometer dials and that is reading 80% humidity and at those low temps you can guess that things feel cold and damp.
So I am sitting next to a radiator (see picture) and have my watercolour paints out and thought I would try and do a painting today with progress pictures.
The drawing has been done, masking fluid has been put on where I want to preserve the lighter colours on the painting, and then the paper was flooded with plain water followed immediately with a brush of yellow ochre over the entire wet paper. This means that the only white areas that can remain on the painting are those masked areas mentioned. When yellow ochre is dry the paper is flooded again on the areas I want blue sky and ocean and whilst wet the blue watercolour is painted in. This will most probably require repeat coverings until I am satisfied with the colour, but has to await for the paper to dry in between each coat.

The next three pictures have had a flood of plain water to blue areas and then a wash of blue. The sky area has had the blue wash diluted has the paint proceeds down the paper to effect the natural condition that occurs in the atmosphere. The sky is darker at the top than at the horizon.
The fourth wash of blue has had some green dropped on to the lagoon area (whilst blue is wet) for reflection of palms which will be later painted behind.

Got carried away after last posted picture and kept painting and forgot to photograph progress.
However, dark area under trees left hand being prepared 1 st wash, beach painted in, far side of lagoon put down some of the rocks put in.
and finally details added using what we call dry brush effect.
