Mate, it was finished with a N/C lacquer.

One thing to consider with Silkyoak is that it is a very open grained timber. I havn't used grainfiller on S/O for years because I disliked the look it gave the timber so I just use a couple of extra coats on lacquer to fill the grain, but if your keen on using an oil finish you may need to seek advice on filler the grain first. I have no experience on fillers under an oil finish.

    Cheers

I love the look of Silky Oak and bought a large ammount of rough sawn boards and dressed them. I came out in an unpleasant rash that took several weeks to go away, I beleive that it was a reaction to Silky Oak.
Fortunately this has not occured with any other timbers. The sad part is that I now have a lot of silky oak that is almost ready for use but I am afraid to touch the stuff.

Many people are allergic to Silky Oak. In the worst case your skin will not only break out in a rash but will also blister and your eyelids will become swollen and itchy. The dust can also cause dermatitis. I know one man who comes out in a painful rash if he walks into the same room as silky. I believe that even non allergic people can be affected with time as it breaks down a persons resistance. Use a bit of care.

Suresh - Get rid of the stuff, you won't regret it and some silly bunny will probably pay you good money.

    Cheers - Neil
