The problem with Asterix is that I have trouble believing that it actually happened

    Thumbs up

I caught the end of it, and it sucked me in. Girl? What girl ??
TBH didn't know there was a film version at all...where have I been? I used to get right into the books and still have a couple somewhere! But I think it they did it justice.

I'm totally freaked out that people here actually know asterix and actually read the books before!

I'm french-canadian and was raised on that stuff. I had all the books as a kid and my dad had them before me. Gotta get me an english version of it, see if the translations were well done at least

There is absolutely NOTHING that an australian can not freak you out about. As for the quality of the translations. Of course they were stuffed up. It's traditional. Just don't tell us ... Al and others might suffer

There is an version of the first film with english translations written by Terry Jones of Monty Python fame. An english translation of the second version was done by Miramax studios. From what I have read on internet forums, neither translations are any good.

A large part of the series' appeal was the many puns and other wordplays in the Asterix series, which can easily be lost in translation. I think the success of Asterix in its english version was due to the great translations done by Anthea Bell and Derek Hockridge. Apparently, such skills just weren't applied to the english translations of the films.

I think you're better off with the subtitles, unless you're fortunate enough to speak French!

Also, it looks like work has already started on the third film based on my favourite Asterix title, "Asterix and the Olympic Games".

I'm an Asterix fan from waaaaaaaay back and have all the original books back when they were less than a fiver to buy. Now there a smidge under $30.

Can definately recommend if you go Foxtel, go digital IQ. All you have to do is check the program you want to record and hit the "R" button and it'll record for you on it's built in hard drive, approx 60hrs worth.

You can also record onto tape from the hard drive, sooooooo if anyone wants a copy of the last two Asterix's let me know.

    Cheers & Beers
