What do you mostly use it for.
Games - LCD with <8ms access times.
Colour critical Photo work - Flat screen CRT
Just general computer work - 17" or 19" LCD >12ms access times are cheaper but won't worry you unless you are playing high end games.

Per Termite's comments, plus:

A 17" LCD with reasonable (say 9 ~ 12ms refresh) - c $500 for a no-namer to about $800, perhaps a bit more
19" ditto: about $600 ~ $900 (although I bought a 19" ViewSonic LCD with 10ms refresh for under $500 about five months ago)

Key point with LCDs: watch out for the dead pixel policy applied by the manufacturer/vendor. Read the PC comics for more in-depth analysis. Also, make sure that you see an example operating and check:

• the colours and contrast
• viewing angles
• the max resolution
• if speakers are built in (generally not very good ones), or not.
• There's another thing, but I've forgotten what it is:confused:

A good quality 19+" CRT - about $500 (as low as $250 for lower quality, up to....)

I just got a 19" Samsung LCD, about 450 sheckels.

You can't keep up with prices in the computer busines, they seem to go down every day. Creative has just released the Xi-Fi series of soundcards and they are already approaching 1/2 the recommended retail price.
I'm waiting.

Then I would get a cheap name brand LCD . BenQ, Philips, Acer, Samsung are the cheaper brands but very good quality for the price, I don't think you need to go over the top with the high end brands.

If you prefer a CRT (Tube type) you can still pick them up between $150-$200. But you cant beat the slim size of a LCD and size for size the screen is a bit bigger on an LCD.

I use a CRT myself for the true colour they give for Photo work.

Oh you are delving into the deep end here.

Flat screen when refering to a CRT monitor is just that, as opposed to the slightly curved screen we are most familiar with.

9-12ms access time (or read time) is how fast the screen can refresh itself. Speeds are down to about 4 ms (miliseconds or 1/1000 of a second). This speed is very important to game freaks who need (or want) the most speed they can get out of everything. I won't go too deeply into overclocking beyond saying that through various means they run their computers faster than the rated speed with a lot of increase in heat and frequent fatal results, to the computer that is.

Yes, there are still quite a few about. Sony have just about gone out of the top end stuff and Philips are using their tubes for top quality flat screen photo monitors.

Until someone comes up with an LCD with true colour rendition, there will always be a market for CRT.

To sum up what has been said.
17" CRT $150-$200
17" LCD $350 on up.
