american comedy shows

I have searched a number of australian sites for american comedy shows
(dvd or tape) but no luck

such as

victor borge
george burns and gracie allen
dean martin
johny cash
jack benny
laugh in
or any of the old tv comedy shows
however no luck, has anybody got a site I can go to to get any of them.

ALSO we recently sent away for a dean martin video tape however found we could not play untill we had it reformatted to the australian system cost $50 for the tape and $45 to have it altered !!!!!!!
I have been told you can put in a code on your recorder to get region 1 which is american and then you can play it on region 4 which is australian. How do you do this. exydvd in east gippsland sell one of the shows from above but it is in region 1.

Most dvd players these days are multiregion I thought? :confused: This should mean they would play the region 1 disc no worries.

If your player is older it may be region "locked", dunno how you'd suss that out, maybe ask a few repairers, email "The Repairman" column in Silicon Chip, or do a serious bit of research on the web.

The region coding only applies to dvd I think.

The other tape you got may have been NTSC, which is the North American (read USA) TV standard, we use a standard called PAL.

Most video recorders these days support NTSC as well I reckon, which would mean just selecting a option on a menu rather than getting every US tape you buy converted.

The only place I have seen those old shows was late one night where they were flogging celebrity "roasts" of some of the old stars you mentioned, was a few years ago tho'.

If you have a DVD burner on your PC try dvd decrypter or dvd shrink and see if you can reformat yourself, save a few bob.
Both are free downloads and the former works very well.
