    Default Painting over tongue oil?

    Hey guys

Restoring a buffet and after sanding bare have coated with tongue oil. Long story short it doesn’t look good and I know want to paint it.

I have many water based primers and paint. The tongue oil has fully cured. Can I prime and paint over the buffer with water based products?

Or do I need to go out and buy oil based?

    Cheers

Hi Mark. There is a product called ESP that can be used as a 1st coat to seal the tung oil and allow paint to stick.

This is a bit late for Mark's project but it may help someone else.

You can isolate just about any finish with Shellac then you can paint over it with whatever finish you want to use, water-based or oil-based. Just make sure the finish you're covering has completely cured.
