L.Clarkson & Co Sheffield chisels
hello all,
have been reading these forums for around a year now and they are as helpful and informative as ever.
i have some Q's for anyone to respond to, that is, does anyone know of anything about the above chisel maker / distributor?
basically i have come into (through some uk friends) the chisels below for 16 pounds including postage to Aus! of course i have done some Goooooogle searches with various strings, but nothing has come up to be helpful. i even managed to end up on a Sheffield local birth / death registry somehow.......no dice
the only info i have is:
L. CLARKSON & CO SHEFFIELD ENGLAND/88-201-5 88-02-00/47
blades stamped 'made in sheffield'
they appear new, and are still in the box. i am so eager to find out more i am posting this before i even have them, hopefully with the quality of sheffield steel it has been worth it!
here is a pic (sorry poor quality) and thanks

Nick,
I am not familiar with Clarkson as a brand but at 16 quid for the set they are aimed at the budget end of the market. In the old days sheffield was the word in good steel but it is perhaps less so now. However at the price I would give it a go. Has to be better than bamboo ones. Should do the job while you hunt down some real good old ones.
Regards
John

I am intrigued by the history of Sheffield, and cannot find any reference
to Clarkson as an edge tool maker, I can find plenty of clarksons but no
L. Clarkson nearest I get is a blacksmith Joseph Clarkson. in 1852
Joseph CLARKSON Blacksmith 77 Duke Street, Park White's 1852
Maybe this guy's distant relative.
I am thinking by the look of the packaging that this is a 20th Cent maker
and not showing up in the earlier directories. It is also possible that it is
a trade mark of some larger company, like Footprint, Sorby, Marples etc, etc.
All that not withstanding, They look like a good set of chisels and at that
price it's a bargain.

Hi Nick,
They may be related to this company,
http://www.yorkshirecic.com/view.asp...&parent_id=229
Hydra Clarkson, a world leader in cutting tools, based in Sheffield, approached the Materials Analysis and Research Services Centre of Collaboration (Materials Analysis and Research Services CIC) to investigate ways to improve the life of cutting tools sold for use in the dry-drilling of aerospace and automotive alloys.
Seems like this company is mostly into machine tooling, maybe they did
a range of chisels at some point in the past.
Timing would be about right, if they were made after the 1950's, based on
the general look of the chisels and packaging. Probably before 1980's

If it is the same Clarkson, they should be good. Clarkson cutting tools are of very high quality and have been for years.
Cheers from NZ

Lewis Clarkson was my Grandfather and used to make tools in Sheffield back in the 1950s. If anyone has any they aren't using any more i'd be more than happy to buy them from you
