Not much notice, but it was left to me to select a topic for tomorrow night's Jabber.

I chanced on a video, which is of interest to me and also revealed a second topic, the subject of which I was not familiar with. You will need to view at least part of this video:

No prizes for the subject, being making a Kayak in the traditional timber style. I think pagie might have some thoughts on this. However, the second topic occurs at the 10min 40 sec mark: It is barrel knives. They look interesting. Doug may have some more information.

Paul, I know Corin Urquhart, the barrel knife maker, quite well.

He runs Gameco Artisan Supplies, where most Aussie knife-makers get our materials from.

Gameco Artisan Supplies is actually a bit of a sideline to Gameco, which is/was a gas appliance and gas fitting company. As I understand it they started a sideline of making gas forges for blacksmithing then branched out into all the other necessities of blacksmithing and knife-making like steel, grinders, tongs, handle materials etc, in order to fill a place in the market that was sadly lacking. It seems that over time the sideline business has overtaken it's parent organisation. He organises bulk buys of steel and equipment at really good prices and looks after his customers, big and small extremely well.

Corin was not a knifemaker but he got caught up in the enthusiasm. He is one of those people who can turn his hand to almost anything, as you can see in that video, and decided to make barrel knives his thing. He usually makes one per year just so that he can say he is a knife-maker and have a common interest with his customers. I think it would be fair to say that without Corin's influence knife-making in Australia would not be as popular as it is today.

Does anyone know what sort of fibreglass he used in the canoe and paddle.

From appearance, flexibility, the way it draped and the ease by which he cut it, I would think it is Dynel but ... ?

A while ago Matt put me onto a youtube channel called Clickspring. I think he also shared it with the Sunday chat group.

The video he recommended I watch was about recreating the Antikythera Device. A very advanced for it's time ancient celestial calculator.

I just found a news article about the discovery of the shipwreck in which the device was rediscovered and thought it might be of interest to Matt and anyone else who had looked at that video.

Ok, so my 17 was closer to Paul's 17 than Pagie's 17 was so somehow i get to pick the topic for next week's jabber.
If that makes no sense to you then you should have been there.

Since it all seems to be about "17" I thought about when I was asked to pick the topic on 17 July when Paul was supposed to do it but pulled out at short notice, and Matt was sick so it fell to me to pick the topic.

With Paul and Matt both out, it just left Pagie and me at the meeting, so we didn't use the topic I posted. I think we just talked about chainsaws again.

Therefore that topic is hereby recycled to next Sunday.

So the topic for tonight's discussion - DRUM ROLL PLEASE ...

We all keep some offcuts and throw others - I suppose. So lets talk about the selection process.

I have a good friend, who is a scientist and understands these things far better than I, is fascinated by the device.
