    Not me, I'm too busy rotating the cutters on my thicknesser.

    5 years of processing recycled timber has taken it's toll on the Shelix head.

    I'm sure there's about 1000 little cutters on the damn thing.

    I might be finished just in time for tomorrow's chat if I work hard.

    Commisserations, Doug.

    Suggest that you try my method:
    * belt sander with 40 or 60 grit belt to take off surface crud and make all nasties highly visible,
    * Manually remove all nasties,
    * Then to jointer/thicknesser.

    Rather than belt sander, I sometimes use a hand planer with sacrificial blades for the first step.

    This minimises but does not remove risks

    Graeme I use similar methods already, including metal-grinding flapdisks when needed. It has not so much been the extra steel bits, which have been few and far between. Some of the timber I have processed in that time was about as hard as steel anyway. A hell of a lot of timber has passed under those blades in the past five years. The job just became due to be done.

    Before I installed the Shelix head about five or six years ago, removing the three straight knives, sharpening and resetting was the worst job in the shed. Now I think the new equivalent job, rotating all the cutters is still the worst, but it's far more pleasant. Once I got into the rhythm of the work it was pretty quick and painless. And the timber comes out looking POLISHED.

    Hi everyone.

    Matt just contacted me off-forum to ask me to run tonight's session because Paul decided to chicken out after losing the draw last week and Matt is feeling unwell.

    So the topic for tonight's discussion - DRUM ROLL PLEASE ...

    "How small, damaged or spalted does an offcut need to be before you throw it away?"

    We all keep some offcuts and throw others - I suppose. So lets talk about the selection process.

    Let's see where this takes us.

    Sunday is hear again, how exciting!!!!.

    So tonight’s subject matter may be one of two, if We have the delightful company of Mr Bushmillar, we will insist he hosts this evening, due to him being absent last week with no note of absence.
    Or we might just go free radical and talk amongst ourselves.
    (There will be NO talks of F chainsaws or Operating rooms it’s getting a bit boring )

    Anyone is welcome, and we especially invite fresh new meat, too attended.

    The Jabber is hosted using Skype

    You may join in as a guest if you are the paranoid type or have strong hate off Big sister brother uncle.

    Start time is 7.30 pm Australia Eastern standard time, thingy.
    Give or take a few minutes and its BYO event.

    Cheers Matt.

    Sunday is Back,

    So the Round Jabber is back on tonight, an hopefully Peter does not feel let down like a 16 year old on a hot date waiting outside the local Dance hall.

    Start time tonight is 7:30 pm on the Dot,give or take a few minutes either side.

    All welcome even the undesirable ones(if your nice).

    Tonight’s Hot too trot subject will be Hand saws, because i just found one in the Wild.

    The meeting is held via Skype, an if your concerned about Big sister watching your every Keyboard tap, you can join as a guess.

    Matt

    Your saw appears to be a No.13 from W.Tyzack & Sons & Turner from around 1965. It is within their Elephant brand range.

    Interestingly earlier models (1950 catalogue) had a more simple handle. I would have expected that to be the other way around.

    The Tyzack family had many different companies and associations. They occupy about sixteen pages in Simon Barley's book.
