Hello from Brisbane
Hello,
I'm Steve from Brisbane southside. I have used this site from time to time and really should have joined long ago.
Speaking of long ago, I was a bit of a bush carpenter in my youth (yards, sheds) but did not get into woodwork as such until the last decade or so, as a strictly amateur DIYer.
So far I've only done simple stuff - workshop storage, plain furniture, box making; just learning skills and setting up a work space. I use a mix of hand tools and power tools (jobsite table saw the most elaborate; no jointers or planers or such).
I want to start a challenging project soon, design and build a tea cabinet from NG Rosewood and Red Cedar. Have most of the timber I need stored away. Hope to learn basic Japanese jointing techniques along the way, instead of just watching the online videos

G'Day & Welcome to a top forum "Steve".....
There are a stack members around Brisbane and cross South East Queensland plus the rest of the country.....
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [Work In Progress] photos with build notes.
Enjoy the forum.
Enjoy your woodwork......

Hi Steve and other Brisbane southside members,
All the best with your journey - those Japanese jointing videos are certainly very inspiring.
I'm also starting on my journey as a DIYer:
- I've made myself an MFT table (spent a small fortune at Axminster buying UJK gear);
- Was about to bite the bullet on the Bosch GKT55 but saw that the narrow rail guide is problematic on MFTs (dogs in the way). Decided to go big and get a TS 75EBQ but alas, there is no stock whatsoever in Brisbane so it's back to the drawing board;
- Currently searching for a place to buy plywood to make bee hive boxes and french cleats tidy up my garage workshop. Is anyone familiar with plywood sold by BGB Marine Plywood in Nerang? Their 18mm and 24mm sheet prices are very appealing. Other places closer to home (but pricier) are Mister Plywood in Underwood and Boatcraft Pacific in underwood.
Any tips on where to buy stable, quality plywood in the southside?
(Sorry OP - don't mean to hijack this thread)
Cheers
L
