This small detail might not affect a lot of us but Paul might have to come in from his shed an hour earlier.

The NRL Grand final kicks off at 6:30 pm in Queensland tonight. This is now coincidentally the same time as the 7:30 Sunday chat in Victoria.

While I am not a fan of either of the competing teams, I will probably be watching most of the match. If both teams play true to their form displayed throughout the season it's likely to be an 80 minute rolling bloodbath. Nothing better than watching two teams of dirty players giving each other the floggings they both richly deserve.

If I drop in to the chat it may be briefly.

So I am not accused of 'saying' just because Matt showed us his WMC style saw handle, here is a very similar handle. It is called the 'Holden' pattern. It is in effect a thumbhole pattern as it allowsa second hand to grip the handle.

It is destined for a 30" Simonds Docking saw.

    Last nights chat was another highly successful chat about stuff that at the time seemed extremely important, yet now with a Coffee in hand I can’t remember.
    Tho Bob seems to be coming at WIP. 

Last night I sought help in finding a suitable diamond file to sharpen my slightly abused high carbon steel pruning saw. Matt suggested that I need a Diamond feather edge File and messaged me with link to search. A quick search this morning revealed an option for a Diamond Rhombic File for $16.89 AUD including delivery,available ex Brisbane. with delivery expected between 26 and 29 October 2021. The geometry of the file appears to be identical to a feather edge file -I have emailed the vendor for clarification

For the benefit of those who did not attend last night's Skype meeting, I am well aware that I could probably buy a new blade for half the price - but this has now become a personal challenge to firstly get the necessary equipment - I will need to make a suitable vice, for example - and then to learn how to sharpen the existing saw.

It will be interesting to see what effect the covid restrictions will have on the Australia Post delivery times.

Your handle has progressed a little since last night. .

It is probably more "inspired" by WMC and Holden than a replica. You have done the same as i with my first handle in this style: Added a lambs tongue. WMC didn't feel that was necessary .

I really like the lambs tongue.

Yesterday I emailed Ames Australia seeking clarification as to the type of file and sharpening procedure for my Cyclone Pole pruner/saw. The replies have confirmed the saw blade is indeed high carbon steel and requires a diamond file. Their suggested sharpening procedure is also attached.

Thank you for your response. Please see below the information on sharpening the saw blade that is provided by our product team:

Preparing for Saw Blade Sharpening
Ensure saw blade is removed from the pole of hand grip before sharpening.
Secure your saw blade before you can begin. Afterward, keep these in mind before starting:
• Keep a saw in place throughout the whole process with the use of a vice.
• Clamp down or secure the saw blade on the table vice or a box surface.
• Tightly secure the pole saw with the serrated edge FACING UP.
• Once the blade is tightly set, clean and dust off wood chips or dirt using a brush wire.
• Dab a bit of orange oil / non-stick lubricant to help clean the blade and in between the saw teeth.
• When the blade is free of any tree debris, you can now begin the sharpening process.

Sharpening
If you look closely, the blade has sharp edges both in front and in back. When sharpening, START with the side from the end CLOSEST to you and work your way up to the other end.
• Take a piece of metal file and position it at a 45-degree angle. Do not sharpen the blade with the rod perpendicular to the blade.
• Hold the blade with one hand or the other tip of the rod. Check which method is more convenient.
• Run the file against the back edge of the tooth. When sharpening, avoid pushing the file back and forth. Move it in one direction only as this sharpens blades more effectively.
• Remember to follow and go with the tooth shape. You also need a little force to create friction.
• Repeat the process with each tooth until you reach the farthest end of the blade.
• Once you’re done with the back edge of the teeth, you can either flip the blade to the other direction or just shift your position to the opposite end.
• Repeat the filing again with the front edge of the teeth.

Picking Your File
• The size of your file should fit well in between each tooth.
• You need to file the whole length of the teeth, so it should fit until the point where the teeth are attached to the blade.
• Using a diamond file for this saw blade is highly recommended
