Danish Oil Problem.
I followed the instructions on the tin, putting another coat on every night giving it a light sanding before hand.
When I took it of the lathe I noticed this.
What is the best way to avoid this?
How many coats is recommended?

Usually with any oils, wipe on let sit for a minute or so then wipe off excess oil, which is exactly what this looks like.

With all oils no matter the brand the first coat is the main coat.
You need to do a flood coat until all the surface is wet, if you see a dry spot then it needs more there.
Have a cup of coffee and then go back and wipe of the excess , any left on will jellify and a bugger to get of
You can then put a second coat on and wipe of straight away.
There should be no need to sand between subsequent coats if you have done a good job in sanding.
The more coats you put on offer another level of protection and a slightly higher sheen
with the extra coats it is just a matter of rubbing in and burnishing of with a clean rag.
Why did you leave it on the lathe as this may be why you did not see this and the mounting part has no oil on it, bad mistake.
To fully cure will take 3-4 weeks for the cross linking processJim Carroll
