    Default rubber hose sanding aid

I was sanding a new plane handle the other day & it occured to me to wrap the sand paper round a piece of rubber heater hose to do the shapes.

    worked very well.
round enough to get into the round bits, flatens out for the flatter bits. rigid enough to support the paper & flexible enough to work the shapes.

It like wrapping the paper round your finger, but better.
    cheers

Another favourite are those old worn out rubber thongs, they are fantastic, cut them into small sizes 2x2 wrap the paper around them and away you go, they mould just nicely to your turnings.

Top tip, I've been eyeing off the profiles available from Lee Valley but I think I'll save my money and use your method.
    Thanks a lot.

I like the idea of recycling thongs. Greenie on it's way.

I tried the rubber hose tip but found it doesn't work too well on the lathe. Actually, it works fine... until I slip and then I'm left with an ingrained mark. 'Tis only carelessness, but if the ol' flip-flops don't mark as much and work as well... [fingers Xed]

I don't recon it has as many advantages on the lathe than it does for hand sanding.

I've been trying small diameter rubber hoses to sand inside my closed form vessels or close to rough edges; in the places where for one reason or another I'd really rather not stick my fingers while things are spinning.

I think a thong may be a better alternative though. I haven't tried it yet.

Slit the hose from end to end and wrap the sandpaper around it. Tuck the ends into the slit. As it wears, twist it so the old paper goes in and fresh paper comes out.
